(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) said Wednesday that an unborn baby with a human heart "absolutely" is a human being.
CNSNews.com asked Salmon: “In the recent Planned Parenthood scandal...there’s been, you know, questions about what is a life, and you know, when does life begin? Is, for you, is an unborn baby with a human heart and a human liver a human being?”
Salmon responded: “Yeah, absolutely. In fact, I just visited--I think in the hearts and minds of most Americans it is. That’s why--we have such a double standard in the United States. If a criminal kills a pregnant woman, he’s prosecuted for two homicides.
"When we went to--My wife and I recently visited the Ground Zero for 9/11, and I saw the walls with the names of the people, the victims on it, and on one the names it said, it named a woman and, it said, ‘and her unborn child.’
“What hypocrisy. I mean, here in our country we consider that a life if someone murders or a terrorist kills somebody [who is in the womb]. Well, how about an abortion doctor? How’s that not murder? That’s how I feel.”
CNSNews.com: “Ok, and just one quick question: What kind of plans do you have in the future for defunding Planned Parenthood?”
Salmon: “I’m sticking with the same plan that we’ve always had, and that is: I will not support anything that funds Planned Parenthood, any funding measure. I voted against the CR [continuing resolution] and if there’s an omnibus that funds Planned Parenthood, I’ll be voting against that.
“I just fundamentally can’t vote for something that I believe most Americans find incredibly reprehensible.
"Not only is money fungible and organizations like Planned Parenthood can shift the money that we, that you know, the hundreds of millions of dollars that we send them to abortion practices. But now that we find that they’re allegedly selling these babies’ body parts, there’s no way I can vote for funding that, ever.”
Both the House of Representatives and Senate recently voted to approve a continue resolution that will fund the government through December 11 that permits federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
According to its latest annual report, Planned Parenthood performed 327,653 abortions in fiscal 2013. It also received $528.4 million in government grants and reimbursements in the year that ended on June 30, 2014. That equaled 41 percent of its revenue.
